In October 2022, I resumed traveling South with my Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle "Kaleidos". I spent 7 months meandering from Cancun through Central America, thoroughly exploring the 7 countries of this region. The route took me from lush low-land jungles to high mountain ranges, through old cities and tiny indigenous villages. This part of the journey was close to 10,000 miles, and will resume in Fall 2023 with South America!
On the edges of the map
Though Central America is geographically small, it is both biologically and culturally extremely rich. Going in, it felt like a Terra Incognita, a blank spot on the map. For many countries, like Honduras and Nicaragua, the only travel guides in existence are twenty years out of date, and the only advice most people would give me is “don’t go there.” But the experience turned out to be incredible and astounding! At every turn, traveling through Central America surprised, challenged, delighted and transformed me more than I ever dreamed.
From jungles to oceans
I slept in a stilted-wooden hut under the light of a million stars on the reef in Belize, watching bioluminescent creatures in the waves dance like a mirror of the sky above. I stared into the gaping sulphur-spewing mouths of volcanoes, and I crossed through impenetrable jungles. Finding the places where the road ends in the green rainforest, with paths so slippery I could barely walk as literal buckets of sweat dripped from my skin. I followed old men and wild dogs, children, and sages down paths only they could show me.
